Description:

Toted as the largest open face quarry in the world, Mount Airy Quarry has been harvesting granite since 1889, run by the North Carolina Granite Corportation. Visible from outer space, the 90-acre quarry is one mile long and about 1/3 of a mile wide. Situated about two miles east of downtown Mount Airy, visitors can view the impressive quarry from an observation deck and can visit downtown's Mount Airy Museum of Regional History to learn about the quarry's origins.
